I started my photographic career as a photojournalist 21 years ago. After 7 years working for several major newspapers in my country, there were circumstances and encounters which provided a major shift in my focus. I met my life companion Romana and soon after embarked on photographing my dear grandmother’s funeral. The combination of these opposite situations (love and death), allowed me to produce very personal body of images, which were in 2000 presented in a solo exhibition ‘When the dandelion blossom’ in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana.
My photography reflects the enjoyment of life, that is the main reason why it’s well translated in colors and high contrasts. The images are fueled by reality. As one of my brides perfectly explained: “Samo sees the best within a given reality and is not trying to create artificial perfection.” My understanding about space comes also from my solid background in architectural field, I hold a bachelor degree in architecture. My intricate, colorful and complex images are all about life, its dynamics and how they evolve in a scene. How connections unfold and fill in a certain space, often presented in my own humorous way, are one of the vital elements of my perspective as a wedding photographer.
I consider myself a passionate storyteller. My images have been widely recognized and awarded. In 2009 I became Slovenian photographer of the year (by EMZIN). For my wedding photography work I had received numerous awards by international wedding photography associations – Fearless Photographers, WPJA (Wedding Photojournalist Association) and ISPWP (The International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) of which I am a member. In 2011 I became TOP 10 Fearless Photographer and in 2013 TOP 10 WPJA Wedding Photojournalist.
